Basilica di San Severo fuori le mura
The Basilica of San Severo fuori le mura is linked to the city’s Christian origins and to the memory of the ancient catacombs, where the remains of Bishop Severo were buried in the 5th century. After centuries of neglect, it was rebuilt in 1573 by the architect Dionisio Lazzari, with a façade in the Bourbon colours of lemon and strawberry and a Latin cross plan.
The revival of the Basilica began with the Sanitansamble orchestra, founded here in 2008, alongside the recording and video production studio Apogeo Records, and with the arrival of Jago’s opera Figlio Velato in the exquisite Cappella dei Bianchi, which has placed the church on the cultural itinerary of the sites promoted by our Cooperative.

Jago’s work inside the Cappella dei Bianchi
Set inside the Cappella dei Bianchi, Jago‘s “Figlio Velato” is one of the most intense works of the route. The sculpture immediately recalls Giuseppe Sanmartino’s “Cristo Velato” (1753), yet reinterpreting the theme and forcing the viewer to confront the present and its innocent victims.

The Cappella dei Bianchi is a small treasure chest holding works by artists such as Giordano, Fracanzano and Vaccaro, alongside 12 canvases on the side walls telling the life of Saint Anthony. At the center of this precious place, the “Figlio Velato”.

San Severo is not only a monumental site, but a living space within the Rione Sanità’s cultural network. Here, religious heritage meets paths of training, music and participation, helping make the basilica an essential point in the neighborhood’s historical and human fabric.
Figlio Velato can be visited in connection with Jago Museum. The route is designed as a spread-out experience in the neighborhood, not as an isolated stop.
Admission is included in the Jago Museum ticket, and vice versa. Booking is compulsory and can be made at the end of your first visit. When you book or collect your ticket at the ticket office, our team will assist you with the transfer between the two sites.

The walk winds through the alleys of the Rione Sanità and opens the doors to two extraordinary places that remained closed for decades: the Blue Church and the Jago Museum. Two remarkable sites that tell stories of courage and rebirth, returned to the community thanks to the commitment of local young people.
Two stops followed by an excellent aperitivo offered in collaboration with “Sciò – Drink and Food”, a bar located at the entrance to Borgo dei Vergini.
